Who We Are

Who we are? Sanma is a relief and development organization that brings hope to the defenseless children and underprivileged families in rural south Asia through enhancing literacy, health, and agricultural productivity.

Sanma began its U.S. operations in 1998 and is incorporated in Arlington, Texas, recognized by the federal government of the United States as a 501 (c) 3 entity. Sanma has two regional training facilities in India that are registered with the local government under the 1955 Charitable Act. The Educational Service Society of India serves as the literacy and medical mission arm of Sanma.

What we do? Sanma recruits and trains Community Educators who educate and build up each village according to the specific needs of the village. Our regional training centers prepare an educational plan based on a template that is designed by highly qualified educational professionals experienced in rural development. Based on the specific need of the village special emphasis is given to programs such as Read India, Healthy Village, and Farm India.

  • Arlington, Texas based non-profit corporation classified by the federal government as a 501 (c) 3 tax exempt organization.

  • North American industry Classification System (NAICS) Code: 813211

  • Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Code: 6732

  • Federal Government Central Contractors Registration (CCR): 606621

Who is the beneficiary of this program, and how does the program benefit the end user? The primary beneficiary of Sanma’s programs is the defenseless children and the small farmer community in south Asia, whose grievance is muted by their own overwhelming weakness. The program enables the end-user to enhance earning capacity through literacy in four major areas. The beneficiaries spend an hour each day at the Community Education Center (CEC), and will receive:
• Functional Literacy (Ability to Read and write regional language)
• Health Literacy (Information to prevent diseases, and skill to use home remedies)
• Agricultural Literacy (Ways to keep animals healthy, and keep grains safe)
• Financial Literacy (Knowledge to prepare a home budget and building a habit to save)

What are the short-term goals of Sanma? The goals for the year 2008 is to build and test the prototype for a public school system which will generate revenue to support its own needs while funding the CECS in its educational district so that the development will be sustainable and measurable.

What are the long term goals? Establish two-fold programs where each program will have one arm to generate revenue while the other can serve and advocate for the deprived community. In this establishment, the Read India program will be funded by fee paid schools, the Healthy Village program by mid-size hospitals, and the Farm India through model farms.

What progress have we made so far? Through the five years of relentless efforts and one million dollars of total investment, Sanma has trained and appointed 85 educators, opened 43 village schools and built 24 water wells, and provided means and tools to the most deserved people, all which together resulted in more than 50,000 lives changed for the better.

Why does Sanma make sense?
Sanma makes sense because its programs are not only effective, but they are also practical. However, investing in to the life of a well-informed person empowers them.
