The Case
“Coming home from work is a joy now, knowing I can get water from less than 100 ft away from my house for my families needs. Before SANMA built this well, we were bringing water from the next village, which often caused quarrel with the people in that village. Many years my family had to leave our village during summer months because we did not have water. We had to sell our cattle and our children suffered, and some of us lost our children.” A happy mother at a SANMA village water well
Each day in India, 1600 children die due to diarrhea, caused by lack of clean water! More than 2 million children die each year to this preventable disease. Hundreds of thousands of poor mothers across the villages of India do not get any time to care and nurture for their newborns because they must bring water to their home on pots they carry from up to a mile away from their dwelling.
A comprehensive solution
SANMA’s water well program offers practical solution to this situation by drilling deep water wells and installing hand pumps at the villages and slums. SANMA’s program that provides fresh water goes beyond drilling a well and erecting a hand pump. Sanma educates villagers ways to preserve water and keep water sources safe.
As part of the Healthy Village program the villagers are educated about the importance of safeguarding the water and the usage of clean water daily. By applying a combination of building water wells and educating people of diseases that killed their infants each day, SANMA has been able to bring the infant mortality rate to zero in seventeen Indian villages last year. Dozens of Indian villages are now educated ways to prevent water born diseases by SANMA’s Health Information Specialists.
“In order to reduce the tragic infant mortality rates in the Indian villages, the villagers needed access to clean water and they needed to be educated in keeping their water sources clean. SANMA addresses the infant mortality rate in India on both of these fronts.”
