Volunteer Opportunity - Mission
Work Abroad: Overview
A New Approach in
Volunteering
SANMA believes that a successful approach to
overseas volunteering is one that prioritizes the ministry to
the spiritual and felt-needs of the local village. We believe
that local people know what is important and culturally
suitable for their village, and we are committed to providing
volunteer work that helps meet their objectives. We believe
that the Indian culture needs to be preserved, but influenced
by the transforming witness of Jesus Christ. We feel that
local people are the experts and our Indian staff is from the
region in which our programs operate, therefore they have an
intimate understanding of the villages and their needs. SANMA
maintains a continuous presence in the villages year-round and
conducts volunteer programs on a monthly basis. This important
aspect of SANMA helps provide stability that’s necessary for
our volunteers to achieve their objectives.
Individual Attention
For SANMA, individual attention means helping
each volunteer integrate into the local culture while
providing the flexibility necessary to meet individual needs.
Prior to departure, you'll speak with one of
our U.S.-based SANMA Project Specialists who have served in
the villages and are able to respond to specific questions
about the area and the project because they've been there.
They can inform you about the local culture and day-to-day
life within the village, as well as give you a sense of what
you might expect as an overseas volunteer.
The SANMA Experience
While many overseas volunteer programs
require extended stays and months of training that most
volunteers cannot afford, our projects allow you to immerse
yourself into the local culture over just one week.
Volunteer Work
Your volunteer work is project-based and
designed with the purpose of accomplishing the appropriate
phase of the project within a week. These projects include
orphanages, schools, churches and construction. Volunteering
in any of these projects provides the foundation and framework
of an experience that allows you to participate in meaningful
work while gaining access to a new culture attainable only by
working side-by-side with local people.
Cultural & Learning
Activities
SANMA has found that the volunteer experience
is truly realized when you are given the opportunity to learn
about local culture and customs, as well as come in contact
with village life. Cultural and learning activities include an
in-depth orientation; insight into cultural norms; discussions
with guest speakers from a variety of fields relevant to
community development;
Free Time
Free time is available some evenings and
Friday has been designated as a free-day for you to shop,
visit area attractions or enjoy a day of rest.
