Articles
prepared by Sanma volunteers about the impact illiteracy has on
various aspects of our society:
|
Illiteracy is generally referred to as one's inability to read and
write. But illiteracy has more severe impacts than simple lack of
education. The effects of illiteracy strongly link to
the social stigmas such as child labor, human trafficking, mafia
operation, and even the spread of horrible diseases such as AIDS!
Sanma is committed to alleviate illiteracy
through our unique Community Education Center (CEC) program. Unlike the
traditional methods of trying to get people to school, Sanma CEC program
takes school to people, providing literacy and knowledge to the most
neglected communities, one village at a time.
We
train and equip child laborers and illiterate adults to re-start a life
where they can be contributing citizens.
Sanma's
literacy program has proved as one of the most effective literacy
programs for south Asia because classes are conducted at
a community level, yet secluded from the interruptions of homes.
The
local Community Education Centers that Sanma operates provide the necessary learning environment for
the student. As a result, most students cross over the barrier of
illiteracy in as short as six months, and are graduated as literates!
CEC graduates become eligible to receive tools and support to make a
better living.
Sanma's mission is to
serve the defenseless and vulnerable people, so that they can reach
their full potential. Each day, Sanma's
Community Education Centers witness people whose lives have been
changed because they were able to break the chain of illiteracy!
Sanma's methods are easily applicable, bringing immediate results to
students, their families, and their surroundings.
