professionals who are specialized in rural development.
• Through 47 Sanma Community Education Centers in three states,
overall development have been made to sixty villages.
• Since the inception in 2002, more than 3000 children have given an
opportunity to have a childhood.
Outlook
• 900,000 children fall victim of the international human trafficking
industry
• 13 million children in India leave their homes each day, working all
day in hazardous working conditions for a pay near to none. Pressed by
the immediate needs of their families they work, and their childhood
is consumed away by the responsibilities of an adult. As far as the
child laborer community in India is concerned, a childhood is only a
dream!
Illiteracy has more severe impacts than simple lack of education!
There is a direct causality between illiteracy and human beings
becoming victims of modern-day slavery and child prostitution.
Children who did not have the opportunity to go to school cannot read
or write, making them susceptible to their lives becoming endangered.
The commercial sex trade also takes advantage of those who cannot read
or write. According to the Commission of Human Rights, two million
girls between the ages of five and fifteen are forced into that
industry every year.
Fortunately, much can be done to keep children from being taken down a
perilous path of pain and persecution. SANMA Read India is a community
based educational program that allows a child laborer to receive
literacy in his or her own pace. Local men, women, and college
students are trained and certified by qualified educators and
appointed in their own communities who provide literacy and moral
support to the child laborers and illiterate adults. Classes are
conducted in the evenings, at the CEC’s. Most students become literate
within six months, and are graduated as literates at the Community
Education Centers SANMA.

"I wanted to learn to write my name. And I dreamed of being able read.
Now I can! Marthamma, a 12-year old girl, who had been working
fulltime since she was ten, wrote her name correctly on the
blackboard, and she opened her Bible to read her favorite verse; ‘But
as many as received him, to them gave he the power to become the sons
of God.’”
“Most of our family bickering was related to handling money. As a CEC
graduate, I am able to make a budget for our home, which enables us to
save, even with my small daily wages as a rickshaw puller.”
Nearly 5,500 girls under the age of fifteen everyday are involuntarily
brought into prostitution rings. Rather interesting reality about the
modern-day slavery is that, it is not the overwhelming power of the
perpetrator, but the overwhelming weakness of the victim feeds this
flourishing business! Beatings, threats, and even killings are common
in both industries. Most of these victims are illiterate, or children
of illiterate parents.
Without providing fundamental education and means to meet their
immediate needs, the modern day slavery will continue to be alive and
well, and more people will fall victim to the trade.
The current situation calls for a system that can provide the
defenseless community skills that are beyond academic grades in a
classroom; it calls for a community based, comprehensive education
plan. Sanma Community Education Centers provides exactly that!

Obstacles
Any
worthwhile effort that benefits humanity has its own challenges and
obstacles, this project is not any different. There are four major
challenges that have been identified and Sanma has already addressed
them.
Local Legal Restrictions
Developing strong partnerships and alliances with the local
governments and people are crucial to the success of this project.
Sanma has already accomplished through the structure of its
organization; the introduction is through proven leaders, while the
implementation is through the local community. Sanma has obtained the
necessary licenses and approvals from the local governments to work in
the region.
Cultural Barriers
Unlike similar organizations, Sanma's trainees and trainers are from
the same culture, which enables the organization to communicate more
effectively.
Criminal Element
The organization acknowledges that illegal forces in India, such as
the human trafficking industry and drug mafia prey on people living in
unsanitary living conditions, and are illiterate. Sanma attempts to
overcome these challenges by training and equipping the local people
to provide education within the community. Community-based training,
coupled with effective management style and efficient deployment
methods help the program overcome such challenges.
